Jeju
Fire festival

Jeju Jeongwol Daeboreum fire festival takes place on S.Korea’s honeymoon island of Jeju-do, and it’s certainly a festival that lights the passions of those who enjoy some culture.

The event takes place on the first full moon of the new year (chinese), and it’s aim is to wish for a good harvest in the coming year. The festival last for 3 days with the first major event being a torchlit parade, followed by the burning of the “moon houses”. As the festival progresses there are lots of things for people to watch including a tug of war competition, traditional folk dancing, a stone carrying competition and there is also some Mongolian horse riding to see as well.

The final day is perhaps the best though with everything leading up to the crescendo, which happens when an entire mountain is set on fire!
