Setsuban

Setsuban, which means seasonal division, is the festival that marks the end of winter and the start of spring. The festival last for 3 days from the beginning of February, with various events held over those 3 days. Kyoto is a great city to enjoy this festival, a place which is steeped in history even without a festival to enjoy. Not to be missed during this festival is the mamemaki (bean throwing) at the Yasaka shrine, which is close to Gion, where you can see a Geisha dance followed by these Geisha throwing beans into the crowd. At Shogo-in temple there is also the chance to see priest banishing the devils of the previous year during a ceremony performed there in the afternoon.
